Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Special Statement: Quality metrics for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy—patient education and transition to primary care

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are common contributors to pregnancy morbidity and mortality in the United States. They are increasingly recognized as risk factors for later-in-life cardiovascular disease, but patient and nonobstetric provider education on these topics is lacking. Structural issues limit recognition of these obstetrical complications by nonobstetric providers and referral to primary care by obstetric providers. We propose two quality metrics within this document: the first focuses on predischarge education for patients, and the second focuses on successful transition to primary care for patients affected by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. We also discuss advocacy in coding, informatics, and care access that may help further improve care in this population.
