Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) occurs when there is a rupture in the sac that contains the baby and the amniotic fluid, prior to the onset of labor. This event is commonly referred to as “breaking the water.” “Viable” refers to the age at which it is possible for the baby to survive outside the mother’s body. The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) defines periviable PROM as rupture of membranes that occurs between 20 0/7 and 25 6/7 weeks’ gestation. Fewer than 1% of pregnancies are affected by this complication, but the consequences for both the mother and the baby can be devastating. Please share the following handout with your patients to guide the decision-making process.
